Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure, the Ford family was managed by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a child Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to associations with words. Ford was first fascinated by acting when she was a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford decided to apply instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered an interview on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford did not complete her degree until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance on the show Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. But Tate quickly began gaining attention for her stand-up comic, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
